Mahalaya
Tomorrow is Mahalaya, an important occasion for the residents of Bengal. Devotional songs are played by the radio in the wee hours of dawn. T.V. shows depict the slaying of Mahisasura by Goddess Durga in the form of dance dramas. In my neighborhood, we participate in a procession singing devotional songs. At the end of the procession we are given to eat jalebis and 'nimki'. Mahalaya reminds us that the Durga Puja ( a great occasion in West Bengal) is just a few days away.
